We are planning a revolution in this book. I would give up my right leg (aka my favorite limb) to be able to watch a well-done movie of this book. If you’re looking for a great fantasy read with a magnificent world, a breathtaking magical system that will leave stars in your eyes, complex characters full of life, and an evil ruler who isn’t what he seems to be, PICK THE FINAL EMPIRE UP. Okay enough fangirling and more reviewing: My reactions at school were literally scaring some of my peers, I think. It was just, ya know, enjoyable.īut this one? Oh boyyy. I didn’t enjoy Sanderson’s Steelheart(lost interest and never got back to the book), and I really liked Rithmatist by him too, but it wasn’t like GREAT or anything. The Mistborn Trilogy was just a series that was constantly on my radar, but I never really bothered to pick up because of one thing or another. I AM N O T SUPPOSED TO BE READING.īut alas, I picked this book one day to procrastinate in the wee hours of the morning (yeah I wake up at 4 am sometimes to do homework) and I couldn’t. I have several papers to write, 40 pages of textbook to read/outline, and two tests to study for by Thursday of this week. In Brandon Sanderson’s intriguing tale of love, loss, despair and hope, a new kind of magic enters the stage – Allomancy, a magic of the metals.

From something traumatic there is a glimmer of light, and Hester is given an opportunity to improve her life, by becoming closer to this aristocratic family, and finding herself immersed in a new world. Then, a day arises in which she finds herself in new surroundings, as her involvement in an accident leads her to meet the Brock family, a wealthy family who provide the care she needs to get back on her feet. Hester is a bright woman, who finds herself trapped and vulnerable in the London slums, and is desperate to escape a place where unspeakable acts are taking place. In The Wicked Cometh we are introduced to a young woman named Hester White. With events taking place in 19 th century London, I was intrigued to uncover the secrets that lie down the murky alleyways and dark underbelly of the city. The book I read for my book club this month was The Wicked Cometh, the debut novel from Laura Carlin. I didn’t see why everybody in heroic fantasy had to be white (and why all the leading women had ‘violet eyes’). As Le Guin wrote in 2004 responding to the adaptation’s whitewashing, “I didn’t see why everybody in science fiction had to be a honky named Bob or Joe or Bill. The priestess Tenar (in some ways the real protagonist of the Earthsea books) has white skin, but only because she hails from the faraway Kargish lands, full of barbarians and people ignorant of magic. Ged has red-brown skin, as does his royal young friend Prince Arren and most of their other associates. Very few characters in Earthsea have white skin. Speaking of the awful Earthsea adaptation, there is actually one major element of the series that both Rowling and Paolini eschewed, and showed Le Guin to be far ahead of her time. One literally feels the absence of her whanau. This story was striking because it is not peopled by so many characters as the other stories are. The Geranium, in which a young woman, isolated from her family is physically abused by her husband. All center on domestic and seemingly mundane events. There are thirteen stories and flashes in Eclectic City some are playful and some are serious. An individual alienated from her whanau is quite literally lost, for the extended family also serves as a safe haven against threats both external and internal. In Grace’s view, the society survives and thrives if the whanau is present. In these stories, the whanau represents the foundation of community and the setting of cultural life and memory. In Electric City, it is the role of the extended family, the whanau, which resonates most with me. Other elements, specifically the portrayal of Maori island life, are like none that I’ve encountered anywhere in literature. Certain elements in thsese stories are familiar, like Grace’s use of oral storytelling and the incorporation of non-English (Maori) words in her prose. I have enjoyed reading all three collections. I have previously reviewed Waiariki and Dream Sleepers, the other two collections. Electric City and Other Stories, originally published in 1987, is the third collection of short stories in Patricia Grace’s Collected Stories. Heartfelt and sexy, the stories of Amanda Lee Koe encompass a skewed world fraught with prestige anxiety, moral relativism, sexual frankness, and the improbable necessity of human connection. Rehash national icons: the truth about racial riot fodder-girl Maria Hertogh living out her days as a chambermaid in Lake Tahoe, a mirage of the Merlion as a ladyboy working Orchard Towers, and a high-stakes fantasy starring the still-suave lead of the 1990s TV hit serial The Unbeatables. Walt Disney Pictures announced the film in September 2015. As the story goes, Puyi ordered his men to scrape off half of the yellow gold coating on the dial because he wanted to check if the watch was made of platinum. He later became the pseudo-emperor of the Japanese puppet state Manchukuo in the 1930s, until its collapse in 1945. Puyi, born Aisin-Gioro Puyi, who inspired the Oscar-winning film “The Last Emperor,” was the 11th and the last monarch of the Qing Dynasty. According to the auction house, the watch is one of eight known copies of the model in the world. According to Thomas Perazzi, head of Phillips Asia’s watch division, the sale of the Puyi timepiece was the highest price sold for a Patek Philippe Reference 96 at a sale. “Oh, crud,” Mina blurted out, sprinting down the stairs leading to the underpass. Looking over her shoulder, she saw her pursuers reach the fence and choose to scale it, instead of squeezing through the impossibly small opening. Within seconds, she reached the steel fence with its glaring metal sign that read “No Trespassing.” Sliding to her knees, Mina squeezed through a gap in the fence, scraping her arms in the process. She knew this area of town, and saw that they were almost to the Tulleyway Bridge. They were quicker than she thought and they were closing the distance fast. She turned a corner, and took a chance to glance over her shoulder at the three very large Fae bearing down on her. Mina gasped, gritted her teeth and pumped her legs harder, trying to put even more distance between her and her pursuers. Her lungs burned with the lack of oxygen and a painful stitch stabbed her side. Being ripped to pieces by Fae wasn’t how she’d envisioned dying. “She sent me an email,” Melissa explains, “asking for advice about getting a publisher.
